Northern Flame – Twisted Reality

After a long wait, Northern Flame released their second album, Twisted Reality, independently in January 2021, following their debut Glimpse of Hope (2014).

The Finnish band continues their journey in melodic power metal, with elements of neoclassical and progressive metal. Imagine a blend of Narnia and Theocracy, with influences from Golden Resurrection and Majestic Vanguard.

What sets Northern Flame apart from many other European metal bands is vocalist Simon Granlund. Instead of the high Geoff Tate-influenced delivery typical of the genre, he uses a mid-range style, impressing with his ability to transition between a lower baritone register and high notes. His voice is reminiscent of Colin Hendra (Wytch Hazel) and Mathias Blad (Falconer).

With improved production on Twisted Reality, Granlund's vocals shine through more clearly, and the album has a stronger sound with deeper guitars and brighter keyboards. The album's packaging is also elevated with eye-catching cover art and a professional booklet featuring lyrics and band photos.

The album opens with the symphonic instrumental Twisted Reality, followed by "Sanctification Of The World," one of the album's standout tracks. It combines assertiveness with grandeur, and this is where the Golden Resurrection comparison becomes clear.

Poltinmerkki

Poltinmerkki, formed in Kotka, Finland in 2002, is a Christian industrial rock/metal act with a unique style that captivates both eyes and ears. The band's lineup has remained stable since 2002, with strong and steady members.

The name Poltinmerkki means "A mark burnt in" in Finnish, and some of their songs are in Finnish, which fits perfectly with their powerful industrial sound.

The band is often compared to Rammstein and Circle of Dust, but their sound is heavier, and the vocalist has a strong, steady voice complemented by guitar, bass, drums, and backup vocals.

Their music is defined by heavy industrial riffs, but the band's message goes deeper.

They aim to convey what life as a Christian can be, with both its struggles and strengths. Their main goal is to speak about God's mercy, which they view as a force against original sin and a path to paradise, where pain no longer exists.
